14-26

I didn't really realize until later on that Holden needs girls to help him be satisfied because he dates a lot of girls. He becomes a madman over what his dates do and he gets really mad at Sally. He has a desperate need for love. He proposes to Sally even though they are clearly not in love with each other. He is so desperate for love and I think he does a terrible job of thinking things through. I think that towards the end he becomes a complete train wreck and makes some bad decisions. He told Phoebe that he wanted to the catcher in the rye, and help children. He wants to help them when they begin to transfer into adulthood. I think more highly of him after that because at least there are some good things about him. Holden tells Antolini that he dreams of helping kids with sexuality problems and protecting them from adulthood but he just gets critized because its time for Holden to grow up. At the end of the book Holden just completely breaks down and he tells Phoebe that he just wants to run away. I think he just went completely crazy. Phoebe convinces him that he should just stay home. I was expecting him to eventually grow up but he didn't and at the end of the book he had to go to a rest home so that he could recover from his depression. He tells people that he is coming to come back and finish school and turn his life around.

Catcher in the rye

I think that Holden is kind of a troublemaker and that he threw away his academic career by getting kicked out of school because he was failing 4 of his 5 classes. He moved in a room with a roomate that he was jelous of and he lived by Ackley, a guy that annoyed him. Holden has a crush on Jane, and he can't really stand that his roomate Stradlater is going on a date with her because he thinks Stradlater is a slob. There is clearly tension between the two of them before Stradlater even goes on the date. I think that Holden is over reacting and he doesn't really have anything to get mad over because he dated Jane a long time ago and Stradlater doesn't even know that. Stradlater goes on the date and when he gets home there is a lot of tension between him and Holden, and they end up getting in a fight. Holden tackles him and I don't think he should have done it because he ends up getting beat up. Stradlater does the right thing and tries to get him to stop and calm down but Holden won't stop provoking him so Stradlater hits him in the face. I don't really blame him for doing it because that is the only way that Holden was going to stop saying things to him. Holden also has to think of the fact that his brother died of leukemia. When it happened, he got very emotional and he slept in the garage and broke out all the windows. I dont blame him for being emotional, and he writes about his brother for Stradlaters english assignment. The assignment is the main reason that they got in a fight because Stradlater freaked on him because his brother had nothing to do with the assignment. Eventually Holden gets to spend some time with Jane and he gets to comfort her and kiss her because her dad upsets her. I think that Holden and Jane will probably end up getting back together and there is going to be a lot of drama between Stradlater and Holden.

Loss- In the book and the movie has to suffer the loss of Daisy for 5 years. I think that in the first video and the book Gatsby shows more emotion towards the loss of Daisy than in the 2nd one. He seems like he cares more and he is more obsessed with getting her back into his life. In the 2nd movie the loss of Myrtle hits Wilson really hard and they show in the 2nd movie him going and talking to Tom and how emotional he got when Myrtle got hit. Wilson seems like he gets more angry in the 2nd movie. The loss of Gatsby isn't as effective because nobody really seems to care that he died besides Nick and Gatsby's father. It bothers Nick because he feels like he is the only one that has really lost anything because of the death. "About five o'clock our procession of three cars reached the cemetary and stopped in a thick drizzle beside the gate" shows that there wasn't very many people at his funeral.

Mutuablity- In the movies it is easy to tell that Nick gets along with everyone. He doesn't really say much about what Gatsby and Daisy are doing and what he saw happen between Myrtle and Tom. Nick is the person that knows everything that is going on. There is no mutuability between Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby because they can't be in the same room together without them getting in a argument and because of the mixed emotions Daisy has between the 2 of them. "You were his closest friend, so I know you'll want to come to his funeral this afternoon" shows how close of friends Gatsby and Nick were.

Time- In the first movie they show time the best, they go back in time and they show when Daisy and Gatsby first met. Time is one of the major themes in the movie because Nick always tells Gatsby that he can't repeat the past and that it isn't going to work out. Gatsby is so wrapped up in the past and how things used to be that he can't get his head on straight and move on. If he could have forgot about the past he wouldn't have been killed. "You can't repeat the past? Why of course you can!" shows how Gatsby thought he could go back and repeat time from 5 years ago and Nick told him that it just wasn't going to happen.

American Dream- Everyone wants to experience the American Dream and be rich and wealthy, and have a nice house. Gatsby got to experience the American Dream because he had a huge house, and he was very wealthy. He threw parties all the time and people just came as they wanted to. In the movies they show how wealthy he is and I think that in the second one it resembles more to the book than the first one because i pictured the pool right next to the house and thats how it was in the second one. In the first movie the pool is away from the house. "I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby's house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited, they went there" shows how people just showed up at Gatsbys parties whenever they wanted to.

Possiblities- There was a lot of possibilities for Gatsby and what could have happened between him and Daisy. But because of his death, nothing can ever happen. Him and Daisy could have ended up getting back together and could have fallen in love. She might have ended up divorcing Tom and marrying Gatsby. Nick could have possibly stayed with Jordan Baker if everything would have been alright between all of them but there was so much drama and a lot of changes after Gatsby died. Wilson wouldn't have killed Gatsby if someone would have told him that Daisy was the one driving the car.

Self made man- Gatsby was the only one that was a self made man. When he was young he wasn't very weathly and he always dreamed of being rich. He made all the money by himself by distributing illegal alchohal. When he left for the war Daisy married Tom while he was trying to make money so that Daisy would marry him. After that, he dedicated himself to becoming very rich so that he could get Daisy back. He bought a house right across the street from her.

Chapter 7

Nick goes to East egg to have lunch at Tom and Daisy's house. Jordan Baker and Gatsby are there too. They have an lunch and Daisy and Gatsby can't keep there eyes off each other. Daisy gets bored and asks Gatsby if he wants to drive into the city and Tom can tell that there is something going on. They all go into town and they go to the plaza hotel. Gatsby and Tom get in a argument there and Tom tells him that him and Daisy have a history that nobody understands. Daisy is becoming more unsure of who she loves. On the way back home, they see that someone got in an accident. A man tells Nick that it was Myrtle that got hit by a yellow car. Nick thinks that it was most likely Gatsby and Daisy that hit her. When Nick gets back to Toms he sees Gatsby hiding in the bushes. Gatsby tells him that he wanted to make sure that Daisy was fine.

Daisy becomes more unsure about who she loves and is falling more towards Tom again. Nick thinks that Daisy and Gatsby hit Myrtle with there car.

Why would Daisy and Gatsby want to hit Myrtle and run away?

Chapter 8

Nick goes to Gatsby's mansion in the morning and Gatsby tells him that he stayed up until 4 in the morning to make sure that Daisy was fine. Nick tells Gatsby that he thinks he should leave and not come back, but Gatsby says that he is not leaving because Daisy was the first girl that he has ever fallen in love with. He also tells Nick that him and Daisy have made love. Nick goes to work that day but can't concentrate because of everything going on. He finds out that Wilson has found out that Gatsby hit Myrtle with the car and he goes and shoots him at his house where he was laying by the pool. He shot himself right after. Nick goes to the house and sees them both dead.

Wilson finds out who is responsible for Myrtles death and he goes and shoots Gatsby and after that he shoots himself. Now 3 people have died in the last couple days because of Gatsby's decision to hit Myrtle.

Why did he hit Myrtle?

Chapter 9

Nick talks about what happened with Gatsby 2 years later. He talks about how there weren't many people at the funeral besides him and a couple of servants, and his father. Nick moves away from East egg and he breaks up with Jordan Baker, who is engaged to another man anyways. Nick talks to Tom and Tom tells him that he thinks Gatsby deserved to die. Nick shakes Toms hand reluctantly because he despises him. The last thing that Nick does before he leaves is he goes over to Gatsbys mansion and thinks about Gatsbys death.

It was a crazy ending to the story how 3 of the people died and especially how Gatsby died. Nick talks to Tom and finds out that Tom told Wilson that Gatsby ran over Mrytle. Nick stays at West Egg for not very long, and then moves to Minnesota.

Why did Gatsby move?

The Great Gatsby 4-6

Chapter 4

Nick talks about all the people that he saw at Gatsby's parties and what they were like. Most of them were very rich and weatlhy. One day Nick and Gatsby drive through the city and they get pulled over by a policeman. He pulls a white card from his wallet and the policeman sees that he is Gatsby and says he's sorry and he won't make the mistake again. After that they drive by a hearse, and a limousine that was drove by a white and had three negroes, two bucks, and a girl in there too. The next day Gatsby and Nick met for lunch, and Mr. Wolfsheim was with Gatsby. Nick ends up finding out that he fixed the world series back in 1919, and he finds out what kind of person Wolfsheim is. After lunch,Nick goes and meets Jordan Baker who tells him what her and Gatsby were talking about at the party. Jordan tells him that Gatsby is in love with Daisy.

Nick talks about all of the people at the parties he saw, and goes out to eat with Mr. Wolfsheim and Gatsby. He finds out that he fixed the world series, and he finds out from Jordan Baker that Gatsby is in love with Daisy.

Does anyone else know about Gatsby being in love with Daisy besides Jordan?

Chapter 5

Nick comes home from his date with Jordan and Gatsby comes running to him to talk about something. Gatsby wants Nick to help it out by getting Daisy to come over for tea. He begs Nick and bribes him inviting him to a bunch of things and Nick agrees that he will help with it. Daisy goes to Gatsbys house for tea and at first he is really nervous. He settles down eventually when Nick leaves them alone for an hour. They end up getting along really well and Nick decides that he will let them be alone for a while.

Gatsby gets to have tea with Daisy thanks to Nicks help and they get along really well, it went the way he wanted it to go.

Is Gatsby trying to make Daisy having an affair?

Chapter 6

Rumors go around about Gatsby about his history. Nick finds out about his real history and that he used to live in South Dakota and he dropped out of college. He worked for a guy that had a severe drinking problem and his job was to make sure he didn't do anything extremily stupid when intoxicated. The man died and leaves Gatsby 25,000 dollars. Nick doesn't see Gatsby or Daisy for a long time until the party when Tom goes with Daisy. Nobody really has a good time and it makes Gatsby mad. He decided that he is going to do everything he can to get Daisy back.

Rumors go throughout the city about Gatsby and Nick learns about his past. Gatsby throws a party in hopes of seeing Daisy again but it backfires because nobody has a good time at the party.

Why would Gatsby throw a party and have Tom come?

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

Chapter 1

Nick lives in a neighborhood in New York called West Egg, he moves there for his work. He used to live in East Egg, where he knew a lot more people and he liked them better. One night he goes over to East Egg to have dinner with his cousin and her husband. There is a girl named Jordan that is also there too. Nick tries to tell everyone about a book and Tom is the only one that shows any interest in it. They eat dinner and then Jordan goes to bed. Tom and Daisy try to convince Nick that he should take a interest in Jordan, but Nick doesn't think anything of it.

Nick goes to the East Egg side to have dinner with his cousin and he husband and a couple of others. They have a dinner and Nick tries to tell Tom about a book. Tom and Daisy tell Nick that they should give Jordan a try.

How old are all of them?

Chapter 2

Tom and Nick ride a train into the city, where they go to Georges house. They pick up Mrytle, Georges wife and Tom takes them to an apartment in New York City called Morningside Heights. They have a party there with Catherine, Mrytle's sister, and some other people. Everybody is drunk, and Mrytle says something about Toms wife. Tom told her to never say anything again and Mrytle got mad and says she can do whatever she wants, and provokes Tom by repeating her name. Tom gets mad and punches her in the nose and breaks her nose. The party ends after that and Nick leaves at 4 in the morning.

They have a party at Morningside Heights and everyone drinks. Things get out of hand and Tom ends up breaking Mrytles nose because she keeps talking about his wife. Nick gets drunk for one of the first times in his life.

Why did they decide to go to the apartment?

Chapter 3

Nick gets an invitation to go to a party at Gatsby's mansion. He decides to go and he feels out of place there because he doesn't really know anybody. He hears people talking about Gatsby's history. He hears people say that Gatsby was a killer and that he was a German spy during the war. Eventually Nick meets Jay Gatsby and he talks to him. He finds out that Gatsby is very interesting and he likes him. The party ends about 2 in the morning. Nick then decides that he is attracted to Jordan, even though he feels that she is a cheater. Nick decides that he is going to stop attending parties and that he is going to go on with his everyday life, which is working in New York City.

Nick goes to Gatsby's party and he has a good time. He finds out that Gatsby is a nice guy, even though he has heard some bad rumors about him. He decides that he is going to stop partying because he wants to prove to himself that he doesn't need to.

Does Jordan feel attracted to Nick too?

Themes: idea that occurs or pervades a work
*Courage, manhood, self-preservation, and disregard for human life.

In the book and the movie, The themes are courage, manhood, self-preservation, and disregard for human life. In the book Henry has to deal with all of these. At the beginning of the book he has no courage, he runs away from battle, and he doesn't prove to himself that he has any courage or that he is a man. He later proves that he has courage, and shows that he is becoming a man. He also has problems with self-preservation because he runs away from battle because he is scared. His problem isn't disregard for human life, he isn't scared to kill. He is just scared to be killed.
In the movie, I think all of the men showed that they have courage because none of them really ran away from battle, and most of them ended up dying. The only lack of courage anyone showed was when the guy wanted to leave there mission because they didn't want to shoot the guy that killed one of their friends. I don't think any of them have any disregard for human life, besides the guy that doesn't want anyone to be killed.

*Symbols
*The dead soilder, and the the flag

The flag- The flag is a symbol in both the book and the movie. The flag represents what you are fighting for, it means everything in a war. When in battle, the person carrying the flag is always in the front, it shows a great deal of courage and bravery because there is a good chance your going to be shot. Henry and Wilson showed their courage by both trying to go for the flag. In the movie, when you go into battle, you always have to make sure someone is carrying the flag.

The dead Soilder- The dead soilder is a symbol for Henry, it makes him realize everything about the war and what is going on around him. The soilder also represents bravery, it shows Henry that the man isn't a coward, and that he should be more like that, it makes him feel kind of guilty. In the movie, some of the guys that were doing the mission died, who showed there bravery and courage.

Motifs:
*noise/silence
*light/dark
*clean/dirty
*youth/maturity

Noise/silence
When there is silence, the soilders are usually thinking about what is to come and how they are going to act upon war. There is silence when there is no battle going on anywhere. When there is noise, that is when a battle is going on and it is very loud. There is the sounds of gunshots and people yelling and screaming and it is just chaos.

Chapters 21-24

Chapter 21

The battle is now over and Henry and all the members of regiment 304 are done fighting. Henry and the rest of them get critizied and it makes Henry really mad. But one of the men tells Henry and Wilson that they have done a great job, and that they heard of the colonels telling their luetinent that Henry and Wilson were definetly the two best fighters of the regiment and they are really brave. It makes Henry and Wilson feel really good.

Henry is outraged that he was critizied in the battle and I don't blame him. I thought he showed great courage by running up and grabbing the flag because it is very dangerous to do that.

Why would the soilders critizise them?

Chapter 22

Henry and Wilson have to wait around for another battle again. They are growing tired of the battles but the compliments that they have got have just made them want to go out and prove themselves again. Henry doesn't mind as much if he dies because having the men who called regiment 304 mule divers would feel pretty dumb if he saw his dead body. The next battle starts again and Henry sees men all around him dying and he feels as if they are losing numbers.

Henry and Wilson have to go through another battle. That would get really old if you had to fight in a battle every day and just keep risking your life. I think Henry has come a long way and he is much braver.

Will they win the battle?

Chapter 23

The battle was a great success. The enemies try to retreat but they are overtaken by Henry's crew. Henry seizes a perfect opportunity when he sees that the opponents flag bearer has been wounded and there aren't many people around him, and he goes for it, but Wilson beats him to it. But together they captured 4 prisoners and took the enemy flag.

Wilson and Henry become heroes once again, they show how couragous they are and they show there bravery by going for the flag. They won the battle and captured 4 prisoners.

Is that the last battle?

Chapter 24

Soon after the battle is over Henry and his troops are ordered to march down to the river again. Henry starts to have second thoughts about everything much like he did in the first battle and he doesn't really know what to do. He eventually talks himself out of being a coward again, and he starts to think about the battle that is going to await him.

Henry has to prepare himself for the battle and for one of the first times they aren't being attacked and they are going to meet the opponents head on. Henry has second thoughts about the whole situation but makes himself realize what is important.

Why does Henry all of the sudden have second thoughts about the battle?

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Chapter 16-20

Chapter 16

The men are in the trenches when they are told that they may be fighting soon. They sit in the trenches for a while and then they are told that the enemy is getting near. So they go into the forrest and Henry complains the whole way saying that whoever is there leader has no idea what he was doing, but one of the other soilders gets after him about it so he decides to be quiet. They get positioned and they wait for the enemy.

Henry is getting another chance to prove to himself that he has pride and he can fight through a battle and not run. They are getting very close to it and he is saying that the leader doesn't know what he's talking about because Henry is probably nervous which i definetly do not blame him.

Why does Henry think that the Leader doesn't know what he is talking about?

Chapter 17

After waiting for a while the battle starts. Henry does everything he is supposed to do. He just keeps reloading and shooting. In all the smoke he can't really see anything so he just keeps shooting randomly. Then he hears one of his comrades laughing at him and he realizes that the battle is over. All his comrades are surprised and they tell him what a great soilder he is. One of the men tells him that if all of them were like that they would be much better off.

Henry earns the respect of all of his comrades because he actually faught and faught hard in that battle. He showed that there wasn't any quit and him and he just kept fighting. I think that he probably thinks a lot more highly of himself now because he proved to himself that he wasn't a liar and he didn't have to lie to his comrades about anything because they saw it.

How many more battles will there be?

Chapter 18

Henry and the rest of the troops relax and enjoy there last victory for a while and then Wilson and Henry decide to go find some water somewhere. They go looking for a stream but they overhear some soilders talking. Someone asks which group of soilders can be spared and someone says Regiment 304 which is Henry's group. They will most likely used as a decoy and most of them will probably be killed.

Henry's group is the one that is going to be chosen to be used as a decoy for a strategy. I would be pretty upset if I was Henry because out of all the groups that is the one that got chosen. The chances that they are going to die is pretty good.

How many groups are there?

Chapter 19

Henry and Wilson are very upset that out of all the groups, they are the one that was chosen. As they head back to there camp they share the news with their comrades that they are going to charge, but they don't say anything about being the group chosen. They start to charge and Wilson and Henry watch a lot of their men get shot right in front of them, they watched the flag carrier die, and they pick it up and keep going.

I would be really scared if I was Henry and Wilson. They are basically just walking into death because they are in the front of the line with the flag and the person carrying the flag is always taken out. Henry is showing his honor though and he isn't running away.

How many people are charging?

Chapter 20

Henry and Wilson pick up the flag and they start running towards the forrest because one of the generals yelled at all of them too. People are just dropping dead everywhere and neither one of the groups are pulling back. Henry encourages his comrades to keep fighting because if they died they were all going to die proud and they were all going to put up a good fight. They put up a good fight and forced the enemy soilders to pull back and run away.

Henry not only shows honor and bravery, but he shows that he is a good leader. The way that the troops talked about their group saying they weren't worth it fired him up and he wanted to go out and show everyone what they could do.

Did just regiment 304 fight?

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

chapters 7-15

Chapter 7

Now that the battle is over, Henry is really worried about what the other people will say about him. He sits in the forest thinking about it, while he hears a battle going on around him. He gets mad at himself because he ran away from battle, and he didn't show that he had any pride. He throws a pine cone at a squirrel in his frusteration. He decides to start moving and he just about goes through a swamp where he sees an animal. He keeps going and he sees a chapel, so he goes inside. When he gets in the chapel he sees a dead man that terrifies him. He thinks that the man is going to jump up and get him and yell at him.

I think that Henry should be afraid of what the other men will say about him. He will probably get called a coward. It is a tough decision on whether or not he wants to go back right away. I don't see why he was so scared of the dead guy, because it seemed to scare him.

Why does Henry not go back right away and why does he go into the chapel?

Chapter 8

Henry leaves the chapel and he starts going through the forrest again. As he is walking through he hears yells of a battle won. He moves closer to get a better look. He sees a bunch of men that are very wounded. One of the men tries to talk to him and Henry tries to aviod him, but the man just keeps talking about the battle. Henry feels kind of guilty. The man asks him which part of his body has been hurt, and Henry runs away in guilt.

I think Henry should feel kind of guilty about not fighting in the battle. He sees the honor that those men have that are bloody and broken. He wishes that he was a part of that and he feels terrible that he ran away.

Why didn't Henry just stay away from the guys that had just gone through the war.

Chapter 9

Henry starts walking around and he sees more and more bloody soilders that had just got done with battle. Eventually he sees Jim, the tall man that was one of his friends from earlier. Jim asks him where he h\as been, and Henry aviods the subject. Henry told Jim that he would take care of him, but Jim is acting differently because he has been shot, and he tries to run away from Henry. When he is running away he just falls on the ground and die. Henry feels terrible.

Jim was one of Henry's closest friends so i feel pretty bad for him. Jim had helped him a lot when Henry first started. Henry won't really have anyone to talk to now because Jim was the only one that he had only really talked to.

Was Jim one of Henry's only friends?

Chapter 10.

Back at their base, Henry is with one of the wounded men that he first saw when he was walking out of the forrest, the one that kept asking him questions. The man tells Henry that he isn't feeling good. Henry worries that he is going to have to see another person die for the 2nd time that day. The man tells him that he feels fine though because he has children that need him at home. Henry can't take it anymore and he goes to leave, but the man starts screaming at him. Henry knows that if he leaves him he will probably die, but he leaves anyways.

Henry is in a tough situation because if he stays, he might have to watch the man die, which will be the 2nd time that day. But if he leaves, then the man is for sure going to die. Henry decides to leave.

What is wrong with the man why does he think Henry is someone he's not?

Chapter 11

Another battle begins and Henry has to decide whether or not he wants to be a coward or not. He almost decides to go into battle, but it would be foolish. He is sore, he hasn't had any food or drink for a long time, and he doesn't have a rifile or any type of weapon so it would be just foolish to try. He backs out and hides hoping that he can still see whats going on. While he is watching he begins to think of some kind of excuse to tell his comrades of why he isn't wounded or why he wasn't fighting. He can't think of anything and he hopes that he won't be called a coward.

There is no way to blame Henry for not going into battle this time. He actually has a legit excuse, he doesn't even have a rifile or any type of weapon. If i were him i probably would lie to my comrades and make up some kind of excuse for why i didn't fight because i doubt that they will just believe that he didn't have a weapon.

What is Henry going to say to his comrades?

Chapter 12

Henry has no idea where he is at and he finds himself in the middle of a battle again. He has no idea where his base is at and which soilders are on his side. He asks one of his comrades where he should be and his comrade gets really mad at him and freaks out on him because Henry won't leave him alone. Henry keeps asking people and finally one of them tells him where he should be at, and Henry goes to the campfire of where he should be at.

I think that it would really be stressful to be in the middle of a battle and have no idea what is going on. Henry really didn't know and he is lucky that one of the men helped him out or he could have easily been killed.

Why can't Henry tell who is who?

Chapter 13

Henry goes back to his camp, not sure what his comrades are going to think of him when they see him. Most of them are sleeping, but a couple are awake. One of the men asks Henry where he has been and what he has been doing and Henry tells him that he got shot in the head. The corporal looks at Henry's head and decides that he got hit on the top of the head with a shotgun shell, and tells one of the men to tend to Henry. Wilson, one of the few men that Henry has talked to, gives him coffee and a blanket before he can go to sleep and Henry feels relived.

Henry got lucky that the corporal thought that he got shot on top of the head, that was Henry's excuse. Henry is now back with all of his comrades at the camp and now he will be supplied with a gun and probably have to fight.

How did the corporal actually believe Henry got shot in the head?

Chapter 14

Henry finally gets to sleep with all of his comrades peacefully. But when he wakes up he thinks that all the bodies next to him are dead and he starts screaming. Wilson asks him if he is ok and looks at his head. They all woke up and started talking about all the battles and Henry breaks the news to everyone that Jim is dead. They talked about how about half of the men had disapeared, but some of them came back because like Henry, they were all throughout the woods.

Henry and all his comrades talk throughtout the night of all the things that have happened and they learn that Jim is dead and that a lot of people have died. I think that Henry is lucky now that he is part of the group again and they don't know that he actually just fled.

Is there going to be a lot more battles?

Chapter 15

All of the soilders are sitting at there base while they wait for another battle. Henry remembers from a while ago when Wilson gave him a letter to give to his family when he dies. He wanted to remind Wilson but he decides not to. They talked for a while and then Wilson asked him for the letter back, so Henry gave it back to him.

Wilson asks for his letter back from Henry that he gave to him before, because he thought that he would be dead by now, he feels embarassed about it.

Why did Wilson want it back?

Chapter 1

There is a guy named Henry that has dreamed of being in the army for many years now. He has dreamed of going into battle and fighting. His mom tells him many reasons why he shouldn't go, but he decides that he is going to go anyways. When his mom finds out, she decides that it is fine and that she will respect his plan, even though she is very scared for him and she cries about it. Henry rooms with the tall soilder named Jim, that tells him that his chance will come for him to go into battle, and all the guys tell him stories. All the stories get Henry really excited about going to battle, and he is constantly thinking about it and he is so excited that he shakes. He really tries to get along with all the guys so that they can get to know him.

I think that Henry's mom has every right to be scared about him going to fight, but it is good that she respects his decision and lets him do what he wants. I don't see why Henry is so excited about going to war because there is always a chance that he could be killed.

Why is Henry so excited about going to war?

Chapter 2

As much as Henry wants to go fight, he starts to wish that he was back home again. He says that he misses taking trips from his house out to the barn, and then going out into the fields for a while, and then coming back. Henry asks one of the comrades if he had ever thought about running away from battle. They get into an argument because Henry says that a lot of good men have talked about what they will do in battle but they will actually run away before they can do it. The guy just gets mad and walks away.

I think since Henry is so young that he probably shouldn't be challenging a veteran soilder on his loyalty. I don't blame Henry for wanting to go back home because I wouldn't really want to be sitting there waiting to fight either.

Why does Henry not doubt that the guy will run away before battle?

Chapter 3

Henry starts to become nervous as they finally start to leave where they were staying at. They go through a forest, and they set camp at another place. Henry goes to bed thinking that everything is fine for now. But then in the morning he wakes up to the tall soilder shaking him. They have to move because they can hear gunfire. They get close to battle and the man that said he would do his part and never run away from battle tells Henry that he thinks he is going to die.

I would be very nervous if i was one of the soilders, knowing that death may be soon. I don't blame the soilder for thinking he is going to die, because he was probably nervous. It would be terrible to be in there position.

Why does the man tell Henry that he is going to die?

Chapter 4

The soilders draw very close to battle and they know that it is going to happen. Henry is doubting himself more than ever and he thinks that he is more likely to run from battle than actually fight bravely. The enemy starts to come closer to them and they have to get there guns ready to prepare for battle.

I don't blame Henry for wanting to run because I'm pretty sure that i would want to do the same thing. After all the years of dreaming about it, it is different than he thought it would actually be.

What does Henry realize about war?

Chapter 5

Finally the war begins to start. Henry and the troops are attacked by the enemy. Henry is still very nervous. But he does what he is told and he just keeps shooting and reloading. The enemy soilders are so outnumbered that they decide to go back to there base and fight another time. Some of the fellow troops die but fortunatly Henry makes it through the battle.

I think that Henry did a good job and didn't run away from battle. He did what he was supposed to do and they won that part of the battle, but they still haven't won the war.

Who won the battle?

Chapter 6

Henry and all his comrads think that the battle is over already so they decided to party, but then someone said that the enemy was coming back for more. Everybody jumps and most of them panic. Unlike the first time, Henry decideds that he would rather run away than be a hero. So he takes off sprinting into the forrest. He keeps running, scared that someone is going to get him. Then after running for a while he hears someone yell that they are gone again.

Henry runs away and so do a lot of his comrades. He probably won't feel to highly about himself for a while and he will doubt himself. I would probably do the same thing as him and just run away.

How many of the troops panic and run away?

Drugs and Alcohol

Drugs and Alchohal

I chose my topic over drugs and alchohal because in the book heart of a champion, that is the main issue that causes Jimmy to drink and drive and end up dead. Alchohal abuse causes over 100,000 deaths in the United States each year and alcohol related motor vehicle accidents are the most common deaths among teenagers. It is the most common drug used by kids 12 to 17. It is very common for teenagers to try alcohol, but they dont realize the consequences of what they are doing. People who drink alcohol are more likely to engage in high risk sexual behavior, have poor grades or job performance, use tobacco products, and experiment with illegal drugs. Teen drivers that are drunk or have some alcohol in them are extremily dangerous because they are inexperienced and they are also an inexperienced drinker. Teen drivers are at a higher crash risk than any other age. Another reason why teenagers use alcohol is because they look to it to cure there depression. Drinking at a young age can be very harmful to you for the rest of your life because it can cause damage to your body system. Long-term heavy drinking damages the liver, nervous system, heart, and brain. It can also lead to high blood pressure, stomach problems, medacine interactions, sexual problems, osteoporosis, and cancer. Alcohol abuse can also lead to violence, when some people are drunk they become angry and violent and they want to hurt people. It can also lead to problems at home and work. If you come to work hung over your boss isn't going to be happy and if you can't handle yourself at home it can break families apart and you can be a bad role model for your kids, and make their childhood harder than it needs to be. But the worst thing of all that alcohol can do is cause accidents, and make your life result in a jail cell. There are many negative symptoms of alcohol, some of the symptoms of an alcohol problem include personality changes, blackouts, drinking more and more, and being in denial that you have a problem. A person with an alcohol problem may sneak drinks, drink alone or early in the morning, and suffer and shake. They may also have family, school, or work problems or get in trouble with the law because of drinking. There are different types of alcohol abuse problems. One type is when a person comes home from work and they drink and drink until they go to bed either because they are just that addicted, or they are very stressed. The other type is when you drink lots of alcohol at a certain time, such as the weekends. And you get so drunk that you sleep the whole next day and you are very hungover. Some people go for long periods of time being sober but then they experience an extreme withdrawl and they will go on for weeks of binge drinking. Someone that is very dependent on alcohol may experience withdrawls during the day which includes trembling, dillusions, hallucinations, and sweating.
In the book Heart of a Champion Jimmy is pressured when he is young into trying drugs. Some of the types of drugs include marijuana, methamphetamines, cocaine, heroin, or other street drugs. And then also the abuse of legal prescription and nonprescription drugs. Most people use drugs to get high, so that they can forget about all of there problems and escape the world. In the United States and Canada, 40 percent of adults will use an illegal drug at some time in their lives. Many people abuse more than one illegal substance at a time.
Some of the ways that you can tell that you are abusing drugs is when you are so physically worn down that you can't do anything. You get fatigued very easily and you may to begin a lasting cough. Emotionally your personality changes and you begin to have mood swings and you don't make very responsible decisions. You make poor judgement, your self-esteem lowers, and you get depressed really easily. You lose interest in just about everything because all you can think about is getting high.
Something that parents really need to do is talk to their children about drugs and alcohol early in their life so that they won't make poor decisions and get behind the wheel. In the book Heart of a Champion nobody took the time to talk to Jimmy about what was wrong with drinking because his dad was an alcoholic. He wasn't able to control himself and he was very angry which caused a divorce in the family. Because Jimmy didn't have that role model when he was young, he made poor choices when he got older.
One of the main things that is helping against drinking and driving is MADD. Mothers Against Drunk Driving. It is an organization to seek to stop drunk driving, help those that have been effected by it, and prevent underage drinking. The organization was founded 30 years ago when a kid was killed by driving drunk and his mother decided to take charge. There has been a lot of accidents since then and they are still trying to take charge. Hopefully we can figure out a way to prevent it so that we can avoid drinking and driving and parents won't have to go through the pain of their kid dying.

Video game survey

Video Game Survey

1. Do you play video games?
2. Do you play vioilent games?
3. Do you prefer a sports game over a shooting one?
4. How long have you been playing video games?
5. How old were you when you could play a rated "M"?
6. Would you prefer playing a video game instead of hanging out with friends?
7. What kind of gaming system do you prefer?
8. Do you think violent video games can change your attitude towards life?
9. What game do you like to play?

Isolating the problem

We did this survey to see what types of gaming systems people use, what types of games they play, and whether or not people play violent games, and if the violent games have an effect on people in real life and if it makes them get angry and violent.

Developing a hypothesis

Our hypothesis is that a majority of the people prefer an X-Box 360 over a PS3 or a Nintendo Wii, most people prefer the game Call of Duty 6, Modern Warfare 2, and that most people think that violent video games dont effect you in real life and make you a more violent and angry person. Our variable is people that play violent video games. There is a causal relationship because people that play violent games, may cause a violent person.

Building a Research Design

The research design is to find people that have some type of gaming system, and determine whether or not they prefer a shooting game over a sports game. If they prefer a shooting game then we can determine whether or not it causes violence. The sample is a X-box 360, a PS3, Or a Wii. The population is all the people around the world that use some type of gaming system.

Collecting the Data

After doing the survey we have collected that most people do play video games, and they prefer an X-Box 360. We have gathered that most people prefer shooting games over sports games. We also now know that most people would rather hang out with friends than play video games, which is good. The favorite for the most popular game was Call of Duty 6, Modern Warfare 2. A couple of people said Halo 3 and Madden 2010.

Analyzing the Data

We have analyzed that our hypothesis was correct, most people prefer an X-box 360, and most people play Call of Duty 6 Modern Warfare 2 over any other game. We also found out that most people agree with us, Violent Video games do not effect the way that you act in real life and they dont make you more violent and aggresive.

Making Generalizations

We can say that a majority of the population play video games. We can conclude that an X-box 360 is the best gaming system, Call of Duty 6 is the most popular game, and that just because you play violent video games, it doesn't make you a more violent person.

Historical Method

In the past there has been gaming systems like Nintendo 64, Saga, and Pong, but none of them had violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty. 20 or 30 years ago people didn't have to worry about violence and blood type of games that could cause people to act violently in real life. This is a problem that has developed in the last 10 years or so.

Nick and Trent work on their games for hours and hours in Nick's back yard, where there is a basketball court that Nick's dad built for him. It is not easy though for Nick because his parents are going through a divorce and Trent has to deal with his troublemaker brother and his mom who is a drunk. But whenever they have to deal with their problems they take care of it through basketball.

3. This book relates to health because of alchohal, drugs, and stress. Trent and his brother get into a lot of trouble with the law because of drinking and doing stupid stuff. Trent also has to deal with the stress of his mom coming home with a different guy every night. Nick has to deal with a lot of different family problems. All of the problems started because of Nick's brother Scott. Scott just wants to play his trumpet but his dad will just not put up with it because he has a lot of talent on the basketball court. His dad pushes him way to hard and that is what causes the divorce.
4. This book relates to the real world because all the time we see kids getting into trouble with the law because they drink when they are underage and they do stupid stuff. Also Trent lives in a bad enviorment where there is a lot of yelling, and the house is basically a hole, and some kids really have to go through that. It also relates to the real world because some kids have to go through there parents divorces like Nick and Scott had to. And a lot of times the reasons parents get divorced is because of the kid and one parent may take one side while the other takes the other side.
5.
1. What position does Nick play in basketball? He plays the point guard spot.
2. What is Trent's best attribute in basketball? Great rebounder and a great defender.

15. What made Scott finally decide to quit? Nick beat him in one on one.
16. What amazed Nick about Trent? He never got tired, even after practice he was still practicing.
17. How did Trent first get ineligable? He was failing every class.
18. Why did Trent ditch everything that was going well for him for his brother? Because he said his brother had always been there for him.
19. What was something Zach had done for Trent that Trent would never forget? One morning before school his mom was laying on the floor naked with a guy and was passed out and Trent made him breakfast and got him ready for school.

Health project

I'm 26 years old and I live just outside Grundy Center with my girlfriend. I just opened a sports store 2 years ago by the mill 7 miles outside of Grundy Center. My girlfriend is a high school teacher at Grundy and this is her 2nd year of teaching. I graduated in the class of 2011 eight years ago. When i was in high school I played basketball and golf and ran track. We went to state in basketball my junior year and won, we were really good. I went to state in track as a junior, and then as a senior i went to state in golf. Sports and my friends were a big part of my high school life as well as my family. I spent a lot of time with my friends and my family was always there for me. I got money by working in the summer because i mowed lawns and it was pretty good money. Once i graduated i decided to go to college at Kirkwood for 2 years before i went to UNI for another 2. I lived in a 4 bedroom house at kirkwood with some of my friends that i went to high school with. It was a long drive away from home. It was nicer to go to UNI the last couple years because it was so much closer to home and i got to see more familiar people. It wasn't until a year after college that i decided what i wanted to do. I decided that i wanted to open a big sports store that was close to my hometown. I decided thats what i wanted to do because sports have been a huge part of my life and it is what my best interest is. There is also a big sports bar restraunt right by the store that i hired someone to run. In the next ten years i really hope that me and my wife can start a family and that my business will go successful.
